MTV had a chokehold on the music video, pop culture, and fashion industry of many childhoods across the globe. Unfortunately, in Europe, this reign will be concluding with the end of the calendar year 2025.
Paramount Global announced that after 44 years of MTV’s continuous broadcasting, the channel will be collapsed by the end of December 31, 2025. Five of MTV’s branch off channels will be pulled: MTV Music, MTV 80s, MTV 90s, Club MTV, and MTV Live.

The shutdown will start in the United Kingdom and Ireland, followed up by France, Germany, Austria, Poland, Hungary, Brazil, and Australia.
Paramount Global is in the process of merging with Skydance Media, and MTV is going down in the midst of the harsh cost-cuts coming along with this merge. Along with this, the digital age of social media and streaming platforms has shifted the way that many people consume music, making television platforms like MTV have historical significance, but less current relevance.
MTV’s legacy began in the United States in 1981, with the music video for “Video Killed Radio Star” by the Buggles being its first feature, potentially predicting the channel’s demise due to the constant evolution of media in our digital world. The channel was host to many significant global pop culture moments, including the premiere of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” music video in December of 1983.
MTV entered the European cultural sphere in 1987, launching promo videos that boosted artists, music careers, global fashion trends, and poignant youth culture.
Digital media platforms and large events such as the VMAS and EMAS will keep MTV alive, but its days of living on television screens will soon be coming to a close.
