Born Grace Kaki Awo Ocansey on March 28, 1991, she is better known for her stage name as Kaakie and is a Ghanaian dancehall act known for her nerve-wracking stage performance.
Kaakie had her basic education at St. Martin De Porres Basic School in Dansoman, and continued to the prestigious Achimota School. In Achimota School Kaakie was a member of the Scripture Union Christian Non Denominational club.
Growing up, Kaakie was a music lover who listened to various genres of music and did karaoke versions for many of the ones she cherished.
After her high school education she went on pursue a BSc Midwifery degree course at the University of Ghana. Whiles in the university, the prolific writer and singer joined the “Stars Of The Future” reality TV show, a singing competition that run on Ghanaian TV for weeks; unfortunately, Kaakie got evicted and was ranked as 5th in the competition.
Even though she wasn’t successful in the competition, she made strong connections with renowned music Engineer and Executive Producer Joshua Raphaelson, popularly known as JMJ Baby courtesy Charter House and got signed to his record label ‘XTRA LARGE MUSIC’
Kaakie after joining her new record label released her debut single “Ewoo” which became an instant hit in the country. Other notable Ghanaian dancehall acts including Samini and Stonebwoy, could not help than to jump on the same song to produce remix versions of “Ewoo” which were titled “Papistic” (Samini & Kaakie), “More Pon More” (Stonewboy & Kaakie) and “Latex” with Edem.
After her debut hit, Kaakie released another single titled “Too Much”. The song rose to prominence in Ghana and internationally and garnered her international attention.
After Kaakie was being internationally recognized, she had the opportunity to share stage with big Jamaican international singjay, Mavado on October 8, 2012 at the Accra Sports Stadium which pulled over 18,000 audience across the globe.
Kaakie, aside being the biggest voice in Africa who does Dancehall music was also a practicing nurse and the very first female to combine Nursing and Music together. She was adjudged as the Best Reggae/Dancehall artiste at the Ghana Music Awards in 2013 and is known to be the first female in Africa to ever win such a category.
Kaakie won several awards and honors within 2 years of her music career, being; “New Artiste of the Year” at Ghana Music Awards 2013, “Reggae/Dancehall Song of the Year” award at the Ghana Music Awards 2013, “Best Female Vocalist” at the 2013 BASS Awards and recognized as “Best New Artiste 2012” by Y 107.9 FM Ghana.
Kaakie in a music career has shared big stages with many renowned international artistes including Keri Hilson, Bow Wow, Busy Signal, Demarco, Mavado, Kiprich, Tiwaa Savage, Davido, Brymo, M.I, Samini, Sarkodie, R2Bees and a host of others.
Kaakie is credited with an album and numerous hit singles including “Ewoo”, “Too Much”, “Toffee Pon Tongue”, “Top Gyal Time”, “DC Tun Up”, “Zuuchia”, “Designer Bumper” [Xtra Large Riddim], “Radio” and “Koom Koom Cha”.
In 2019, the renowned singer earned a Master’s degree certificate from the Anglia Ruskin University in the United Kingdom and got married to her lovely husband in a traditional ceremony in 2020.
