Born Charles Kwadwo Fosu on the 29th of September 1964 in Nsuta Amangoase in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Charles, popularly called Daddy Lumba in entertainment circles was born to Owoahene Kwadwo Fosu and Comfort Gyamfi who were both teachers. His father died when he was at a tender age and his mother followed in 2001 in Kumasi.
His mother’s death affected him and his career, he was so close to her and she meant everything to him. Many of the music legend’s records including “Anidasoɔ Wɔhɔ Ma Obiara”, “Ohia Asɛm”, “Agya Bi Wua Agya Bi Tease”, “Ɛmmere Pa Bɛba”, were dedicated to her.
Daddy Lumba’s music career started at an early age of his life. When he was 16 years old, he led the school choir from 1983 to 1985 at Juabeng Senior High School.
After completion, the music legend formed the Lumba Brothers group with his friends Yaw, Kwabena, and his girlfriend
Theresa Abrebrese in Senior High School. He traveled to Germany for greener pastures after school and met Ernest Nana Acheampong who introduced him to a band and the highlife music genre.
He reformed the ‘Lumba Brothers’ group with Ernest in Germany who had an already existing music group called ‘talking dreams’ with a white man. Daddy Lumba at that point only knew about gospel music and give credits to Ernest Acheampong for introducing him to the highlife genre.
The music duo released an album in 1989 produced by Akosua Serwaa, Daddy Lumba’s wife. The title of the Album was ‘Yɛɛyɛ Aka Akwantuo Mu’.
Daddy Lumba has 34 albums to his credit, these albums include ‘Aben Wɔha’, ‘Awosuɔ’, ‘Obi Ate Me So Buɔ’, ‘Sika Asɛm’ and ‘Ebi Se Ɛyɛ Aduro’. Daddy Lumba projected highlife sensation Ofori Amponsah through his ‘Woho Kyere’ hit album in 1999, where he recorded and produced 5 songs with Ofori Amponsah which shot Ofori Amponsah into the limelight.
In his music career, he has won several awards and honors including ‘Artist of the year’ and ‘Album and song of the year’ at the Ghana Music Awards in 1999.
Daddy Lumba’s beaming career has not been without controversies, including accusations of he bleaching his skin which he has denied in several occasions.
Daddy Lumba now is described as a contemporary highlife musician and married with 10 children.
