Paul Pogba is one of the best midfielders in the world when he’s on form, which it’s fair to say he currently is, but the Manchester United midfielder still has three current players he looks up to.
It’s fair to say that Paul Pogba ha already won one major battle this season. Some say that no player can be bigger than a club or a manager but the Frenchman has seen off Jose Mourinho and is back to being on the pitch at Old Trafford.
A major problem for the Scot seemed to be his own insistence that Pogba thought he was like ‘defensive midfielder’ Andrea Pirlo, despite the player himself saying he was happier now that he had more freedom to attack and that Pirlo was hardly a defensive midfielder for Juve.
If Souness really wanted to know who the 25 year old was trying to be like, and I assume he doesn’t actually want to know, he should have asked like Stadium Astro. Speaking on YouTube Pogba revealed who he admired, saying:
“I learn from Yaya Toure, [Andres] Iniesta, Xavi, Paul Scholes, Michael Carrick.
“I love to look at midfielders to make myself, Paul Pogba, with all the best qualities of the other ones.
“Now I look at Kevin De Bruyne… [Luka] Modric… [Toni] Kroos.
“All those players now, they’re playing and I love looking at them and I try and learn from them, It’s always good for me.”
All those midfielders and not a Pirlo in sight, however will Souness learn to understand that- I figure he won’t and nor does he care.
What is surprising and refreshing is that Pogba is happy to admit that he is still learning, even from those who like him are still playing, and named rival Kevin de Bruyne as someone he learns from.
There’s no doubt that Pogba belongs in his own list of illustrious company and soon enough he may be the best of the lot.
