The rivalry between Real Madrid and Barcelona dates back centuries and shows no signs of stopping – and why should it?
The two Spanish giants constantly go head-to-head for La Liga glory every season, while they occasionally clash in the Champions League.
El Clasico is considered one of the biggest derby matches in world football – and it’s hardly a surprise that it’s one of the most watched fixtures each season with the star studded talent that is usually on show.
But one thing that has almost become extinct between the two clubs are transfers. In fact, the last player to make a direct transfer between the two rivals is Javier Saviola who, in 2007, moved from Barcelona to Real Madrid.
Moving between the clubs is certainly a risky move and fans rarely take it well – see Luis Figo’s move from Barcelona to Real Madrid in 2000 for concrete evidence in the form of a pig’s head.
However, that didn’t stop Spanish outlet Cadene Ser from asking Madrid defender Pepe which player he would like to sign from Barcelona.
But instead of naming the likes of Messi, Neymar and Suarez, Pepe looked towards a player who hasn’t even played a league match for the club yet.
“No, I think we’re alright… Andre Gomes? Yes, we played together in the national team, but he wanted to go to Barcelona,” he said, per Sport, when asked which Barcelona player he’d sign for Los Blancos.
Well, Pepe was never going to name one of the big players, was he?
Rather unsurprisingly, he went for a compatriot of his – a player that helped Portugal triumph at Euro 2016 this summer.
Gomes has signed for Luis Enrique’s side this summer from Valencia in a deal worth €35 million, plus €20 million in add-ons. He’s struggled with injury since arriving in Catalonia but the 23-year-old appears to have an extremely bright future ahead of him.
So much so, that Pepe wishes he had signed for the Bernabeu club, rather than Barcelona.
