The Headmistress of Mary Mother of Good Counsel School, Sr. Francisca Asiedua Appiah (HDR) has touted the efforts of the Captain Planet Foundation’s Planeteer Alliance in Ghana as a viable channel to heighten the interest and participation of Ghanaian youth in protecting the environment.

Speaking to YFM Ghana, the headteacher noted that children are able to make impact in more ways than one. She believes that the ardent nature of young Ghanaians fused with the training offered by the Planeteer Alliance would awaken an interest which translates into acts driven towards a higher conscience environmental sustainability in Ghana. “Children also have their potentials and their ability to do something. So it shouldn’t always be adults doing things and putting the children at the background and then doing it. When we give our children the opportunity they will also excel in whatever field that they have been exposed to.”

“I think the world should know and understand that we should also open up for the children to also come out with their talents – whatever they can do to help protect our environment .” she added.

She further backed her inclusive stance on the matter of environmental protection on the fact of allowing young Ghanaians to cooperate with one another and set out a standard which will widely be accepted by all Ghanaians. “Sometimes you see that a whole lot of children litter around but if they see that now we ourselves has started doing something, it will help others to also do same. So we will not go out to litter gutters because it is their initiative, so when they see an adult doing that, they can boldly tell the person please lets keep our environment clean.”

The Captain Planet Foundation (CPF) is a nonprofit organization that empowers young people to protect the environment through education, leadership training, and action-based programs. Through its global youth network, the Planeteer Alliance, CPF equips individuals aged 10–25 with tools to run climate campaigns and create sustainable change. In Ghana, CPF is training young leaders to tackle plastic pollution, advocate for better policies, and lead community clean-ups. They also support creative recycling and environmental education in schools. CPF’s mission in Ghana is to build a generation of eco-conscious changemakers who act locally to protect the planet.
