Rio Ferdinand has revealed he approached Cristiano Ronaldo for his opinions on new Manchester United signing Bruno Fernandes.
Fernandes finally joined ‘The Red Devils’ yesterday following a long transfer saga.
Ferdinand has admitted he reached out to former United teammates Ronaldo and Nani for their thoughts on the 25-year-old.
“I’ve spoken to a few of his teammates at national level and club level,’ Ferdinand told FIVE.
“Nani, my old teammate, says he’s a fantastic player, says he’s perfect for England. Says he’s got all the tools, all the right attributes.
“Cristiano said he’s fantastic, creates chances for him [for Portugal]. He can manipulate the ball, take the ball, confident.
“These are the type of things that you want to hear when Manchester United are signing a player.
“So fans, based on what I’ve heard about him and what I’ve seen, I’m hopeful and confident that this guy can go out there and do the job.”
Ronaldo and Fernandes were teammates in last summer’s UEFA Nations League which Portugal went on to win.
While Nani also spent a season with Fernandes at Sporting.
United have chased Fernandes since last summer and finally got their man on a five-and-a-half year deal on Thursday.
He admitted that he became a fan of United through watching Ronaldo during his six year stay at the Theatre of Dreams.
He told ManUtd.com:
“My love of Manchester United really started when I used to watch Cristiano Ronaldo play and ever since then I have been a big fan of this great club.
“For me to now play for Manchester United feels incredible, I have worked hard to get to this moment and I can promise the fans that I will give everything for the badge to help bring us more success and trophies. I want to thank Sporting for everything they have done for me.
“It is surreal to hear the nice words that have been said about me from players that used to play for this team.
“A massive thank you to Ole and everyone at Manchester United for the trust they have shown in me and I can’t wait to start to repay that on the pitch.”
Fernandes could be in line to make his debut on Saturday evening when United face Wolves.
