Ghanaian Dancehall and Reggae artiste, Addi Self has reiterated that his music career was elevated after his first encounter with the self-acclaimed African Dancehall King, Shatta Wale.
According to him, Shatta Wale was one of the Dancehall artistes who influenced his career choice growing up from the slums. However, barely did he imagine getting acquainted and having close relations with the music star at the time.
In an interview with Rev Erskine on Y107.9 FM’s “Myd Mornings Radio Show,” Addi Self disclosed that his first physical encounter with Shatta Wale happened at the Accra Mall after he had been engaging constantly with the Shatta Movement (SM) boss on social media.
“Coming down here the people who had an influence on me were Yogie Doddy then Shatta Wale and when it got to Shatta, the love was deep. Me watching Shatta and spreading the love on social media with him reciprocating that was special to me and eventually we linked up,” he said.
“The first day I met Shatta Wale was right at the round-about at Accra Mall and I was actually coming to buy a ticket for Ghana Meet Niaja. I was in my car driving and friend who happened to have seen the number plate told me that was Shatta and we started hitting horns. We knew me from afar because we were already talking online. We started talking and asked me to link up and when he got home he texted me and that’s where it all started,” he continued.
He furthered, “We’ve recorded a lot of songs. Taking Over even came later, we recorded Ghetto Star, Love Me so Real and a lot of singles before Taking Over passed through and that was the biggest we ever did. I realized it when we went to perform at the University of Ghana during one of 4stye TV’s shows and it was crazy. We literally had to perform it like five times.”
Addi Self was a member of the infamous SM Militants who at a point had Ghanaians on hold with some classic hits. However, their rise to the top of the music industry was startled after a controversial stint with the SM boss, Shatta Wale.
However, Addi Self is currently making a statement for himself having launched his community engagement tour with the people of Maamobi to herald his appreciation and commitment to the community he grew from. He is currently on a media tour promoting his latest project dubbed, “Slum To The Hills” mixtape, championing his “Self “Love Campaign”.
