Ghanaian highlife artist and renowned song writer Rex Omar has advised the African youth to abandon the norm of having two weddings to officially tie the knot in marriage.
The prolific singer took to social media to express his views on the effects of this contemporary tradition of which he stated was a waste of money and a defiance of African tradition laid down by our ancestors.
“My dear young people of Africa, after the two families have met and you’re done performing the traditional marriage ceremony with all the customs, please stop calling it an engagement; that is the actual marriage according to our African tradition laid down for us by our ancestors.” he submitted in a post made on his Facebook page.
According to the ‘Dada Dida’ hitmaker, the European weddings which are also known as ‘white weddings’ are organized out of sheer pressure; with huge sums of money sufficient for a life start up as a newly wedded couple. “Do not after that out pressure on yourselves, waste money that could have been used to start life to go perform another white European wedding ceremony and call that the marriage; Our Ancestors were not stupid.” he advised.
There have been several comments that have emerged from the post in support and against the singer’s view. See a few comments below.
