In last night Champions League group stage defeat to CSKA Moscow, many were baffled when Real Madrid captain Marcelo tried to hand over the armband to Isco, but the Spanish midfielder straight up refused the offer.
It caused plenty of debate. Isco was heavily booed and whistled throughout the game, so many believed it could have been something to do with the crowd’s reaction.
Even teammate Marcelo admitted he was baffled by Isco’s decision, saying:
“I tried to give the armband to Isco but he told me that I had to give it to Carvajal. I don’t know what the reason for that was.”
But according to Spanish publication Marca, the reason behind his refusal of the captain’s armband was in fact, a touching gesture to another defender, Dani Carvajal.
The report suggests Isco promised he would let Carvajal take it.
Isco was named the captain for their Copa Del Rey victory against Melilla, so the midfielder promised he could take it when he came on in the 74th minute, a great gesture that sounds out the suggestion he was unhappy.
The 26-year-old’s future at Real Madrid looks more uncertain than ever following Wednesday night’s humiliating defeat to CSKA Moscow in the Champions League group stages.
Throughout the 3-0 thrashing many fans were heard jeering and whistling as speculation surrounding his future at the club increases day by day
Rumours of a move to the Premier League have been touted in recent days, and an incident involving Isco, and those watching from the Bernabeu stands, may suggest further unrest.
According to Spanish reports, Isco was heard asking the fans ‘what do you want?’ after missing a chance on goal.
He was booed by Madrid fans for 10 minutes after this incident, according to AS, but another section of the Bernabeu drowned out the boo’s with applause.
Real Madrid’s club official Emilio Butragueno later said he was claiming a corner.
“Isco’s gesture? I suspect that he was claiming a corner. We have to be united, especially when the situation is adverse.” he said.
“Whistling a player weakens us. We aren’t used to losing at home, esp in the UCL. We didn’t deserve this scoreline.”
