Corporate Affairs Manager at the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Kofi Atta Kakra Kusi, has indicated that the tourism sector has over the years developed into an all-inclusive space.
According to him, previous administrators of the sector have equally done their bits in ensuring the growth of tourism in Ghana. However, he noted the current Akufo-Addo administration has been the most innovative government with initiatives such as the “Year of Return,” “Beyond the Return” and the most recently launched “Destination Ghana” agenda.
In an exclusive interview on y107.9 FM’s “Weekend Rush” radio talk show with Kokonsa Kester, the GTA spokesperson labelled tourism as a “multi-sectoral sector” of Ghana’s economy.
He said, “Since 2019, you realize that tourism in Ghana has seen a more inclusive package. At some point in time, domestic tourism was not doing well in our country but as part of the ‘Year of Return’ and now ‘Beyond the Return’, you realize that we have engineered much of the youthful exuberance into the tourism industry in terms of domestic tourism. Getting the tour operators, guides car rentals, hotels associations to understand the industry well enough to push the all-inclusive system.
He added “Tourism is a multi-sectoral sector, meaning it involves the various sectors of the economy. That is why somethings you hear people say they want to come to Ghana for health tourism, adventure tourism, architecture tourism and lots like that. You realize that a lot has been done so far as part of year of return and now beyond the return.”
Mr. Atta Kakra Kusi further highlighted that the newly introduced “Destination Ghana” is part of the series to promote Ghana’s tourism and a continuation of the previous initiatives.
“For two solid years the whole world more or less was locked up, now restrictions have been lifted and the tour operators can be able to show take people to so many places. PCR tests at the airport which served as a disincentive to the tour operators and a number of people have now been lifted. So, all these cumulates into the fact that we have to bring up an initiative to showcase Ghana to the world again that we are still progressing in terms of our international and domestic tourism,” he added.
“Destination Ghana” was launched by the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in London, United Kingdom on Sunday, 3rd April 2022, as part of his government’s flagship projects in the tourism sector.
