Mobile Telecommunication Network, Vodafone Ghana, has organized a mentorship programme to empower girls acrossnthe country to mark this year’s International Women’s Day.
The programme which was organized by Vodafone was part of the various impactful activities held to commemorate this year’s International Women’ Day. The programme also aimed at encouraging young girls to pursue their career goals.
Speaking at the event, Human Resource Director of Vodafone Ghana, Ms Ashiokai Akrong, said the aim of the programme is to give girls an empowerment message to encourage them in their fields of study.
“Vodafone feels privileged to mentor these young girls to reach their maximum potential. As we mark this year’s International Women’s Day with “Thrive” as the global theme, we believe that these girls would be better placed if given the right training and the opportunities to help them develop and use their potentials,” she said.
She stated that Vodafone Ghana has a role to play in making sure that the future of young girls in Ghana were shaped, adding, “Vodafone dedicated time to share with the girls some expectations and lessons in life that would guide and empower them to achieve their dreams.”
She advised the girls to work hard in their fields of study especially, Science, Technology, English and Mathematics to achieve their set goals. She urged the young girls to pay much attention to their academic performance and view higher education as necessary for their development in future.
Ms Akrong explained that Vodafone has over the years offered sponsorship to female engineering students of various universities and gives them opportunity to internship, National Service personnel are permanently recruited into the Vodafone family.
“As part of the quest to encourage gender balance in Science, Technology, engineering, and Maths (STEM) programs, the Vodafone has over the years helped fifty-two (52) ladies on the Vodafone ‘Female Engineering Scholars Sponsorship (FESS) programme,” she said.
In the mentoring session, the girls were taken through a range of topics, including setting up career goals, discovering their talents, building their self-confidence, building strategic friendships and network, paying attention to their personal hygiene and also their religious lives.
