The entire results of 598 candidates of this year’s West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) have been cancelled, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has said.

Additionally, the council has withheld the results of candidates from 85 schools for alleged cases of mass cheating.
The withheld results will be cancelled if the candidates are found culpable or released if otherwise.
A statement signed and issued by the Deputy Director of Public Affairs of the council, Mrs Agnes Teye-Cudjoe, announcing the release of the provisional results, said 598 candidates had their entire results cancelled, while 13 others whose results were cancelled had been barred from taking any of the council’s examinations for two years, mainly for impersonation during the examination.
The statement further said 1,576 candidates had their subject results cancelled.
It said with the aid of the Item Differentia Profile (IDP) software, 2,293 candidates who were identified to have cheated in the English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science papers had had their relevant subject results cancelled.
Performance in core subjects
Giving statistics of the performance of the candidates in the core subjects, the statement said 125,065 candidates obtained between A1 and C6, while 59,725 scored between D7 and E8, with 46,595 scoring F9 in the English Language.
In Mathematics, 77,108 obtained A1-C6, while 65,007 obtained D7-E8, with 89,477 scoring F9.
It said 113,933 of the candidates had between A1-C6 in Integrated Science, while 75,938 obtained D7-E8 and 42,519 of them had F9.
Furthermore, in Social Studies, it said, 129,058 obtained A1-C6, while 53,824 obtained D7-E8, with 49,198 obtaining F9.
The statement, however, said the general performance for 2016 was a significant improvement over that of 2015.
