Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has urged Ghanaians, especially the youth to protect the country’s democracy at all cost.

He believes the youth have no idea what Ghana has been through as a country because they never lived through it, hence, they may not appreciate the fact that Ghana is a democratic country.

According to him, there is nothing good to about war, therefore, he also desire to advice the youth anytime he sees in the news that people are planning to stage coups or the youth going on demonstrations.

“A lot of the young people in this country don’t have a clue what the country has been through and that is why we should protect our democracy. When I hear people talk about coups, I want to warn them. You haven’t lived through it”, he said during an interview on the Y-Leaderboard Series with host, Rev. Erskine.

Mr. Agyepong narrated that back when Ghana was under military rule, Ghanaians, including himself, had to sacrifice a lot to get the country back to democracy. “A lot of people lost their businesses, lost family members, people had to run out of this country, your money will just be confiscated for no reason and a whole lot”, he recalled.

He added “Things have happened in this country so war is not good. What we have is a system that should work. We may have our shortcomings, disappointments and all that but the best thing is to respect the constitution and every four years, we all go to the polls for the majority to decide who they want based on the messages that they have imbibed during the campaigns”, he advised.

“In order to keep the peace and democracy in Ghana, the government must not lose focus of the fact that they are in power for the welfare of the ordinary Ghanaian especially the underprivileged, as that is the mandate of the people”.
