WhatsApp announced that it’s introducing Stickers to help users express themselves more easily while communicating with friends and family on its app.
After introducing emojis and camera features, Status and animated GIFs to make communicating on its app more fun and expressive, WhatsApp is following in its parent Facebook’s footsteps with the introduction of Stickers. WhatsApp is beginning the rollout of this new feature on both iOS and Android devices in the next few weeks, by launching a few sticker packs that are created by its own designers and some from other designers.
As the company’s announcement reads, “Whether with a smiling teacup or a broken heart, stickers help you share your feelings in a way that you can’t always express with words.” To use stickers in a chat, users simply tap the sticker button and choose the sticker they want to share. Similarly, users can add new sticker packs by tapping on the plus icon.
Additionally, WhatsApp has added support for third-party sticker packs so that designers and developers from around the world can also create stickers for the app. To allow them to do so, WhatsApp has “included a set of APIs and interfaces” that will help them “build sticker apps that add stickers to WhatsApp on Android or iOS.”
Designers or developers who would like to do so can publish their sticker app just like any other app directly to the Google Play Store or Apple App Store – users can then download and install the app to be able to send stickers from the packs.
