A panel discussion at the 2026 International Women’s Day symposium organised by the Women in Procurement and Supply Chain (WIPSC) brought together leading female professionals to discuss the challenges women face in the procurement industry and how they can navigate the space to achieve success.
The panel held on Thursday, at the Accra Technical University- Akwabaa Lodge, featured Chief Supply Chain Officer at AirtelTigo Ghana, Ms. Evelyn Sam, Head of Agriculture, Ms. Doris Yenwaana Vaayi, Acting Director for Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation at the National Vaccine Institute, Naana Afrakoma Yawson.
Ms. Araba Kudiabor, who shared insights from their professional journeys and encouraged young female students to remain confident and resilient in the field.
Speaking during the discussion, Ms. Doris Yenwaana Vaayi noted that although the procurement profession has historically been dominated by men, women who remain committed to building their competence and professional credibility can excel in the industry.
“The procurement space has traditionally been seen as male dominated, but that should not discourage women from entering the profession. What matters most is your competence, your integrity and your ability to deliver results,” she said.
She further encouraged young women to continuously develop their skills and take advantage of mentorship opportunities available within the sector.
“Women must invest in knowledge, mentorship and professional development because when you are equipped with the right skills, your work will speak for you,” she added.
For her part, Naana Afrakoma Yawson, Acting Director for Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation at the National Vaccine Institute, emphasized the importance of confidence and self-belief for women navigating leadership spaces.
“As women in procurement and policy environments, we often have to prove ourselves beyond what is expected. But the key is to remain confident in your abilities and never underestimate the value you bring to the table,” she said.
“Do not wait to be invited before you step forward. Prepare yourself, build your capacity and when the opportunity comes, you must be ready to lead,” she encouraged the students to embrace leadership opportunities whenever they arise.
Adding her perspective, Mrs. Evelyn Sam raised concerns about the abuse of power and sexual advances that some women encounter in male-dominated professional environments.
She made mention of many instances where some men try to take advantage of young women entering the profession, sometimes expecting inappropriate relationships in exchange for opportunities. That is something young women must be firm about rejecting,” she stated.
She encouraged the students to maintain professionalism and protect their dignity as they build their careers.
“You must know your value and set clear boundaries. Your competence and hard work should be what opens doors for you, not anything else,” she added.
The symposium formed part of activities marking the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration, bringing together female professionals and students from Accra Technical University (ATU) to share experiences, mentorship and career guidance within the procurement and supply chain industry.
