From Mamprobi, a bustling suburb of Accra, Romeo Swag has been steadily making strides with his eyes set on the global stage. Born Romeo Tevie, the burgeoning Ghanaian Hip-Hop artiste is the latest to feature on YFM’s Y-Radar.
Born and raised in Mamprobi’s diverse neighborhood, Romeo’s journey is a captivating tale of passion, perseverance, and an unwavering connection to his roots.
For Romeo Swag like most people in the community, he was exposed to the dizzying contrasts of Mamprobi – the good and the bad, the joyous and the challenging.
He reminisces about the vibrant community spirit, the savoury aroma of local delicacies wafting through the air and the rhythmic moments that echoed from every corner.
Music wasn’t just a pastime; for Romeo. It was a way of life. From catching glimpses of local legends like Screwface to witnessing electrifying performances by icons like Shatta Wale, Romeo Swag’s early years were steeped in musical inspiration.
“I saw it all, from the heated neighborhood football matches to the unexpected performances by big-name artists like Shatta Wale. Those experiences shaped who I am today.”
Even within the confines of his academic walls, where serious work took precedence, the occasional performance sparked his flames and passion for music. He found himself navigating the delicate balance between his studies and his artistic pursuits. Pursuing a degree in Biochemistry at the University of Ghana, he faced the daunting task of juggling the demands of the classroom with the allure of the recording studio.
“It wasn’t easy, I’ll admit but my love for music was so strong that I had to find a way to make it work,” he shared.
Romeo Swag’s ascent in the music scene wasn’t meteoric but marked by steady determination and passion. He goes back memory lane to primary 5 where he discovered his talent. He has since desired to put his talent to use.
Romeo’s early forays into the industry started with some captivating remixes and covers. He began a social media sensation with one freestyle video that went viral on Ghana Twitter (X) which quickly gained him a following. “I wasn’t trying to chase fame or anything like that,” he explains, his hands gesturing animatedly. “I was just doing what I loved, and somehow, it resonated with people.”
However, it wasn’t just about the views. It was about the validation of his creativity, propelling him to create original music that resonated with audiences far and wide.
The turning point in Romeo Swag’s career came when he was crowned the “YFM’s Next Rated Hip-Hop Artist of the Year.” It was a moment of validation for Romeo Swag and a confirmation that his talent was recognized and celebrated by industry peers and fans alike. Yet, amidst the glitz and glamour, he remained grounded, focused on the journey ahead.
“YFM is a big deal in Ghana,” he says, his voice brimming with pride. “For them to recognize my work, it showed me that I was on the right path,” he added.
But Romeo’s journey is far from one-dimensional. His artistic versatility, seamlessly transitioning between genres, is proof of his deep-rooted connection to his cultural heritage. “I’m a proud Ghanaian, and I want the world to know that,” he declares. “From the Ga language in my music to the way I move on stage, it’s all a reflection of who I am and where I come from.”
This cultural identity has become a driving force in Romeo’s persona, with his signature phrase “I come alive in the nighttime” encapsulating his nocturnal creativity and his dedication to his craft. “I’m a bit of a night owl,” he chuckles, “and that’s when I feel most inspired and in my element.”
This cultural connection extends beyond his music, as Romeo’s fashion sense and stage presence exude a distinct African flair. “I am a full-blooded African, and I think people should know that once I appear,” he proclaims. “In my music, my language, which is Ga, as well as my dance moves, also showcase my African origin. I am proud to be a Ghanaian and an African as a whole, so the world has to know it.”
Romeo Swag has a seemingly loving personality but admirably, his performances make for an interesting look. He has appeared on several shows and events across the country including Guide Radio’s Soul Beach at Polo Beach, Drift Hunters and the “Power Up Your Life” Festival organized by Boomplay in partnership with Itel. From the euphoria of the 2023 Afrofuture Rising Star, Manifestivities and YFM’s Area Codes Jam to the to the soul-stirring ambiance of Black Sherif’s Zaama disco, He certainly announced himself to the world with his recent performances. His engagement with the audience is enviable as his presence on stage is nothing short of electrifying.
Like any journey, Romeo Swag’s path has not been without its obstacles. From financial constraints to navigating the complexities of the music industry, he faced challenges head-on. He is fueled by a relentless drive to succeed. Yet, with each setback came invaluable lessons and a reaffirmation of his resilience.
“I’m a man of action,” he states, his gaze steady and uncompromising. “Just wait and see what I do next.”
