YouTube Originals will now be available to everyone to view free of charge, and will be supported by ad revenue.
At its Brandcast event in New York City Twitter announced that starting September 24, YouTube Originals will no longer be exclusive to YouTube Premium subscribers, and be available free of charge to all YouTube viewers.
As such, YouTube Originals will now be supported by ad revenue and Premium subscribers will continue to enjoy an ad-free experience.
Premium subscribers will also continue to enjoy exclusive benefits such as access to all available episodes in series and their premiers, subscriber-only content, and a new recommended downloads section.
YouTube chief brand officer Robert Kyncl provided more information in an interview with Adweek:
“One of the changes that we’ve gone through is to align our Originals with the way YouTube works, which is that everything is available free, and everything is available behind a paywall if there are certain features that you value in order to pay for a subscription. With Originals, we’ve gone from being focused on driving subscriptions to aligning with the core business.”
