Spokesperson on Youth Development for the National Democratic Congress, Julius Kwame Anthony, has touted the current state of democracy in Ghana as defective.
The youth advocate, speaking in an Xspaces session organized by YFM Ghana on Sunday, September 15, 2024, in commemoration of International Day of Democracy, likened the nature of democracy in Ghana to the communist system which is observed in many Asian countries.
Julius Kwame Anthony stressed on the defective nature of Ghana’s political space, which he termed as “a system that does not allow people to air their opinions.” Many young people in Ghana have been excluded from decision making processes on matters regarding their own welfare. “We do not run a proper democracy in Ghana, What we are running here is two communist groups that are fighting over who gets to run Ghana.” he stated.
He mentioned the attitude of political parties leaving what is important to Ghanaians to chance and paying more attention to what they find relevant.
Mr. Anthony blames Ghana’s stunted democracy on the limited duty of political parties to do the bidding of their respective financial aides and finance support systems. “Until we deal with those things we cannot have proper democracy in Ghana. And this is linked to the source of financing of political parties; we do not know their source of financing,”
Global Media Alliance Broadcasting Company (GMABC), as part of celebrations of International Day of Democracy, organized an X Spaces session with the theme, “Our Voice. Our Future: Celebrating Democracy,” to highlight the importance of amplifying youth voices in democratic processes.
