Son Heung-Min was seen in floods of tears after South Korea’s defeat at the hands of Mexico.
The two countries faced off in a Group F match and the South American side continued their dazzling form with goals from Carlos Vela and Javier Hernández earning their side the victory.
Tottenham Hotspurs attacker Son replied in the dying embers of the match with a fine strike from distance but it amounted to nothing in the end and Mexico went home winners in their second group stage game.
After the game, Son broke down in tears in front of South Korea president Moon Jae-in and the rest of the squad.
“I really didn’t want to cry, but after I saw my teammates and the President in the locker room, I couldn’t stop crying” said Son via the Mirror.
“I feel sorry for my teammates, especially those who were having their first World Cup. They really did a great job.
“Our players really did well, but it’s sad that we lost, and the result is something that the players can’t do anything about. We did our best.”
Toni Kroos’ game-winning goal against Sweden, however, was enough to save South Korea, for the time-being, at least.
Now the Asian side have to beat Germany in their final match and hope Mexico nab all three points against Sweden in their final game.
It’s a tough, if not near-enough impossible task, which is why Son was visibly upset after the match, him believing that his nation’s World Cup dream all but died with their defeat to Mexico.
But in football, and especially the World Cup, anything is possible.
