The Ghanaian flag continues to fly high in the world of collegiate athletics as senior standout Aziz Mohammed etched his name deeper into the history books this weekend. Competing at the Coach Richard Alsup Open inside the Hughes Fieldhouse, the Northwest Missouri State star delivered a masterclass in middle-distance running, shattering the school’s indoor mile record.
In what was arguably the marquee event of the meet, Aziz Mohammed clocked a blistering 3:59.76 in the men’s 1-mile run. The performance earned him a second-place finish in a high-octane race and officially broke the Northwest Missouri State school record for the fastest mile ever run by a Bearcat.

The time also serves as a crucial NCAA Division II provisional mark, practically punching his ticket to the national stage. According to reports from Happyghana.com, Mohammed has been on an upward trajectory that shows no signs of slowing down, consistently proving why he is considered one of the most elite Ghanaian exports in the sport today.
Mohammed’s success in Maryville is the latest chapter in a storied collegiate career. Before transferring to Northwest Missouri State, Mohammed made waves at West Texas A&M, where he famously shattered a 47-year-old school record in the 1500m at the Bryan Clay Invitational with a time of 3:40.29.
His historic stats, frequently highlighted by Happy Ghana, include:
- 2025 Cap Shelton Award Winner: Named the Lone Star Conference’s Outdoor Men’s Outstanding Track Athlete of the Year.
- NCAA Division II National Champion: Claimed the gold in the 1500m (Outdoor) in 2024.
- Ghana National U-20 Record Holder: Set the benchmark in the 5000m during the 2019 U20 Athletics Championship in Abidjan.
- Cross Country Dominance: Led Northwest to an NCAA Central Regional title in 2025 with a first-place individual finish in the 10K (29:53.48).
While the mile record was the highlight of his weekend, Mohammed’s versatility remains his greatest weapon. He also secured a Division II provisional time in the 3,000-meter run (8:09.39) during this indoor season, ranking him among the best in the nation across multiple distances.
Aziz’s journey—from his formative years at Mfantsipim School in Cape Coast to the podiums of the United States, has become a beacon of inspiration for aspiring Ghanaian athletes. His relentless pursuit of excellence and “trust in the process” has seen him transition from a promising junior to a dominant collegiate force.
The Bearcats and their Ghanaian talisman will now head to the Rumble in the Jungle Invitational at Pittsburg State University on January 23. With the indoor season heating up, all eyes remain on Mohammed as he eyes further records and a potential podium finish at the NCAA Indoor National Championships.
