Be truthful with artistes on the quality of their sound - Juls on elevating Ghanaian music

British-Ghanaian producer Juls has opened up on the state of Ghanaian music and the role of the media in promoting Ghanaian music.

In a recent interview on Y 107.9 FM’s Myd Morning Radio Show, the renowned record producer indicated that the media can play a significant role in this process by providing feedback to artistes.

He believes that there is a need for more constructive conversations between the media, artistes, producers and musicians to enhance the quality of Ghanaian music.

“The role of the media would be to tell the artiste that the music is not good enough when it’s not,”. “When you meet them when they’re doing submissions for the songs, figure out what time they work, speak to them and say, ‘Listen, your music is not good enough so we can’t play it.'”

Juls also highlighted the importance of artistes taking responsibility for the quality of their music. He believes that artistes need to be willing to acknowledge when their music is subpar and take the necessary steps to improve it.

“At some point, there was love for Nigerian music being played on the radio, but I love artistes who can admit that their music is not good enough so they can go back and redo something better,”.

Juls called for greater collaboration and synergy between all players in the music industry to enhance the quality of Ghanaian music and promote it on the global stage.

“There’s a conversation, but the conversations are not conversations that can help amplify the Ghanaian sound,”. “We need to start figuring out how to collaborate, how to get these sounds out there, and how to make it bigger.”

Juls’ comments serve as a reminder that Ghanaian music has the potential to compete on the global music stage if all stakeholders work together to improve the quality of the music and promote it effectively.
