I have no regret leaving Legon for UCC – Deputy CEO, Ghana Association of Bankers

September 2, 2020
in News

Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Ghana Association of Bankers, John Awuah in an interview on Y 107.9 FM disclosed that he withdrew from the University of Ghana (Legon) after being in the school for about six (6) weeks.
According to him, he has never regretted leaving Legon for the University of Cape Coast (UCC) and believes it was a defining decision of his life.
The banker who took this decision without the knowledge of his parents indicated that he was not worried at the time for talking such a bold step and would repeat it.
Speaking to the host of the Myd Morning radio show, Rev. Esrkine, John Awuah said, “None of my family members knew I was leaving Legon. I left after spending a month and half at Legon and went to Cape Coast. I left Legon which was at that time regarded as the most prestigious school in Ghana and I was not worried taking that decision.”
Explaining his reason for leaving Legon, the banker motioned that he was offered a course in UCC which he preferred to what Legon offered him. “I was offered BA Administration at Legon but I wanted to do BSc Administration which had accounting. The school authorities told me I could transfer to BSc Admin after my first year but I didn’t trust the system.”
He noted that he had also received admission from UCC to study Business Commerce which had the accounting element at the time so he left to pursue that rather.
“I left to cape coast and I was far behind and had to catch up with studies. All this while, my parents did not know I had left Legon. My father would call and ask if I was in school and I would say yes. I did well leaving Legon and I have no regret doing so,” he reiterated.
John Awuah furthered that leaving Legon was for his greater good. “It was for a greater good. My friends were all studying BSc Admin and I was the only person studying BA Admin. And I sometimes missed classes to hang out with them but when it was time for their class, they would all leave. If this had gone on for a while, it would’ve affected my studies” and that also drove John Awuah to leave Legon.
He disclosed that on his way to Kaneshie after deciding to quit Legon, his friend tried to convince him to stay. “On my way to the Kaneshie bus terminal, my friend asked me if I didn’t want to be a Legonite? But the driving force was that I wanted to pursue my dream.”
