Lawyer Joshua Yirenkyi-Smart has cautioned that leading someone into a serious romantic relationship with no genuine intention of marriage could, under certain circumstances, attract legal consequences under Ghanaian law.
Speaking on Legal Lens, a segment on Y107.9FM’s Myd Morning Radio Show, the legal practitioner explained that while not every failed relationship results in legal action, the law may intervene where there is evidence of deception, financial loss or promises that caused significant harm to the other party.
According to Lawyer Smart, these relationships which are built on false promises of marriage can sometimes extend beyond emotional disappointment. “The promise does not need to write it down, but can cause you to love them through their behaviour. Being led on by the person’s conduct and the person fails to marry you has legal consequences.”
He further explained that each case is assessed on its own merits, stressing that the courts consider the evidence presented before determining whether legal remedies are available.
He advised listeners to exercise caution in their relationships and avoid making commitments or representations they do not intend to honour, noting that honesty and transparency remain essential in protecting both parties from unnecessary disputes.
