Military to deliver PPE to tertiary institutions over the weekend– GES

June 13, 2020
in News

The Deputy Director General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) Dr. Kwabena Bempah Tandoh has disclosed that the military is in the process of delivering Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as promised by the president to schools.
According to him, the military should finish distributing these PPEs to schools, especially tertiary ones as they await the arrival of final year students on Monday over the weekend.
He indicated that the logistics team is being led by the military and with their precision and focus, all will be completed over the weekend. “The military’s Logistics General is part of the President’s Schools Re-opening Team which is led by the Senior Minister and which includes the Director-General of GES, Executive Secretary of NCTE, the Director-General of Ghana Health Service and reps from both tertiary and Pre-Tertiary private schools.”
Speaking on the Y-Campus Express (YCE) show on Y107.9FM, hosted by Jonny Stone, Dr. Tandoh said, “The PPEs have started arriving in the regions and we’re going to make sure each institution receives its package over the weekend. Each student will get three washable and reusable face masks with the schools also receiving other PPEs to support their already existing ones.”
Dr. Tandoh advised private institutions to liaise with the National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) to make sure they are not overlooked during this critical distribution period.
The President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo in his 10th address to the nation partially eased some restrictions placed on the country to fight the COVID-19 pandemic.
He decided to lift the ban placed on schools to allow final year students take their exit exams.
Portions of his address read, “From Monday, 15th June, 2020, the decision has been taken, after engagement with the Teacher Unions, whose co-operation I salute, to reopen schools and universities to allow for final year junior high, senior high
and university students to resume classes ahead of the conduct of their
respective exit examinations.
Indeed, final year university students are to report to their universities on 15th June; final year senior high school (SHS3) students, together with SHS 2 Gold Track students, on 22nd June; and final year junior high school (JHS 3) students on 29th June. JHS 3 classes will comprise a maximum of thirty (30) students; SHS classes a maximum of twenty-five (25) students; and university lectures will take place with half the class sizes.
Again, prior to the opening of schools and universities, the Ministry of Education, and the heads of public and private educational institutions will
fumigate and disinfect their institutions.
Each student, teacher, and non-teaching staff will be provided with re-usable face masks by the Ministry of Education. For the avoidance of doubt, all other educational facilities, private and public, for non-final year students, will remain closed.”
