The Ministry of Youth Empowerment and Development, in collaboration with the National Youth Authority (NYA), has officially launched the National Youth Festival 2026, a month-long celebration aimed at promoting youth development, innovation and active participation in national development throughout August.
The launch brought together officials from the National Youth Authority, Youth Employment Agency (YEA), National Service Authority, youth-focused institutions and other key stakeholders committed to advancing opportunities for young people across the country.
Delivering his address, Minister for Youth Empowerment and Development, George Opare Addo, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to empowering young people through policies and programmes that promote skills development, entrepreneurship, leadership and employment.
He indicated that the celebrations are held in conjunction with the International Youth Day which is celebrated every year on August 12, 2026.
The celebrations set a spotlight on the growing demand of Artificial Intelligence and the integration of cutting edge technology in everyday life towards development.
He described the National Youth Festival as a platform that celebrates the potential of Ghanaian youth while creating opportunities for them to showcase their talents, creativity and innovations to develop the nation. “More than 7 out of ever 10 young people have considered leaving Ghana in search of better opportunities. Research also shows that drug use among our young people begins at a very alarming early age with many exposed before they even turn 15; Despite the challenges 88% of our young people actively participate in civic and community activities. These statistics give us hope . It tells us that our young people have not given up on Ghana, they are simply asking for opportunities, leadership and to be trusted and this government has heard that call.”
Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority, Osman Abdullai Ayariga Esq., noted that this year’s festival is designed to bring together young people from all regions of the country through a series of activities that encourage inclusion, civic engagement and national unity. According to him, the celebration will feature educational programmes, sports, entrepreneurship forums, exhibitions, community outreach initiatives, cultural displays and talent showcases, all geared towards inspiring the next generation of leaders.
He further encouraged young people to actively participate in the various activities lined up for the festival, stressing that the initiative goes beyond celebration and serves as a platform to equip the youth with practical skills, networks and opportunities that contribute to their personal and professional growth.
The National Youth Festival 2026 is expected to be observed nationwide throughout August, with activities taking place across country’s regions as government and its partners continue efforts to place young people at the centre of Ghana’s development agenda.
