Ras Kuuku reveals how he outwitted his aunt to stop hawking iced water

September 7, 2020
in Entertainment

There is always a riveting story behind every success and the reigning VGMA Reggae/Dancehall artiste of the year has revealed that his journey has never been easy right from childhood.
Ras Kuuku, loved and cherished by many in the ghettos in sharing part of his life story revealed that he used his smarts to outwit his auntie who made him sell iced water on the streets of Accra.
He made this disclosure in an interview with Happy 98.9 FM’s DJ Advicer on the Ayekoo After Drive.
The ‘Puom’ hitmaker who lost his mum at age five (5) was compelled to live with his auntie who was rather hard on him.
Ras Kuuku, recounting some of his experiences under his auntie revealed that she made him sell iced water on the street. After developing some street smarts, Ras applied his smarts to get off the scorching sun.
“I told my auntie I wasn’t feeling well and she took me to the Achimota hospital. When I was left alone in the consulting room with the Doctor, I told him my mother was late and my auntie was making me sell iced water on the street. I then asked him to write a note to my auntie asking her not to make me carry any load on my head. He did that and that was the end of my iced water selling business.”
The musician who is sensitive about street hawking motioned that it is sad for him to see people doing so in traffic jams because of the many associated dangers.
“I pray that every parent will get enough money and not put their kids on the streets to sell. I’ll never allow my son to sell on the street. It is sad for that to happen,” he stated.
Street hawking is very common on the streets of the capital with both the young and old being involved. The situation is similar in Kumasi, Cape Coast, Takoradi and other cities and major towns.
Many hawkers enter the trade expecting to graduate from street vending to become shop owners.
In-between vending on the streets and becoming proud shop owners, hawkers face numerous risks and challenges like road accidents, robbery, and pick pocketing, seizure of goods by the authorities and exposure to the elements but on the grounds of survival, most people are still engaged in street hawking.
