Nigerian Afrobeats star Tiwa Savage has pushed back against claims that she does not support or collaborate with female artistes, arguing that many of her collaborations with women fail to receive the promotion they deserve.
Speaking about the issue, Savage said she has actually worked with several female artistes throughout her career, but the songs often do not receive the same level of support and promotion as collaborations involving male artistes.
“When I feature female artists, they don’t promote the songs.”
Savage cited collaborations with artistes including Waje, Simi, Efya, Becca, Yemi Alade and Ayra Starr, among others, as examples of her efforts to support women in the music industry.
She questioned why these collaborations often fail to generate the same attention as other high-profile releases, suggesting that the lack of promotion contributes to the perception that she does not work with enough female artistes. “How are you now going to encourage me to do more? Now I am going to call Odumodu Blavk, because I am going to be like ah this song is getting me million of streams but when I do with females, you guys don’t support it.”
Savage also recalled deliberately bringing Yemi Alade onto her show after noticing comparisons between the two artistes, explaining that she wanted to avoid allowing fan narratives to create division between them.
