The Telecel Ghana Foundation has launched the 2026 edition of its annual flagship Homecoming initiative, with an ambition to discharge over 500 insolvent patients across 16 government health facilities nationwide.

Launched at the Shai Osudoku District Hospital in Dodowa, the Foundation settled the outstanding medical bills of 29 patients who had completed treatment but were unable to return home because they could not afford their bills. The Foundation also provided NHIS registration and renewal for 120 people, strengthening their sustainable access to healthcare beyond immediate intervention.

Rita Agyeiwaa Rockson, Head of Foundation, Sustainability and External Communications at Telecel Ghana, said the initiative was established to ensure that financial hardship does not prevent recovered patients from returning to their families. “No patient should remain in hospital simply because they are unable to pay their medical bills. Unfortunately, this reality continues to affect many families across Ghana, and it is the reason the Telecel Foundation Homecoming initiative was established.

“Through Homecoming, we work with selected government hospitals and the department of social welfare to identify and support patients who are medically fit for discharge but cannot return home because of outstanding bills. This year, we aim to discharge over 500 patients across 16 government health facilities nationwide. For us, recovery should always lead home,” she said.

The 2026 edition is the Foundation’s most extensive Homecoming intervention to date. Since its inception in 2011, the initiative has provided relief to financially vulnerable patients while helping participating hospitals recover outstanding bills and make beds available to other patients requiring care.

Beyond supporting patients, the Foundation presented essential maternal-health equipment to the Shai Osudoku District Hospital to support healthcare professionals and improve service delivery.

Dr. Alexander Adjei, Medical Director of the Shai Osudoku District Hospital, welcomed the intervention and described it as an example of how partnerships can improve healthcare outcomes.  “Healthcare delivery thrives on strong partnerships. At the hospital level, limited resources and financial constraints can affect our ability to respond to the growing needs of patients, which makes collaborations such as this extremely important. We are grateful to the Telecel Ghana Foundation for supporting patients through the Homecoming initiative and for providing essential equipment to strengthen healthcare delivery at our facility. Through partnerships like this, we can continue to improve our services and share more positive stories from Ghana’s healthcare sector,” Dr Adjei said.

For Florence, one of the beneficiaries, the intervention ended more than two weeks of uncertainty after she completed her treatment but could not settle her hospital bill. “All I wanted was to return home, but my family and I did not have the money to pay the bill. Being pregnant, I wanted to be with my family, where I could rest, eat well and take better care of myself and my baby. When I heard that the Telecel Ghana Foundation had settled my bill, I felt as though a heavy burden had been lifted from me. I can finally go home and focus on having a healthy pregnancy. I am truly grateful for this support,” Florence said.

The launch marked the beginning of a nationwide rollout across the Southern, Northern and Middle belts from 4 November to 7 December 2026.

Following the intervention at the Shai Osudoku District Hospital, the Southern Belt phase will continue at Anfoega Hospital, Eastern Regional Hospital, Cape Coast Teaching Hospital and Kwesimintsim Hospital. The initiative will subsequently move to selected facilities in the Northern and Middle belts.

The 2026 Homecoming initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Ghana Health Service, participating government health facilities and The Medical Reformist.

Through the expanded initiative, the Telecel Ghana Foundation continues its commitment to helping recovered patients return home with dignity, easing the burden on vulnerable families and strengthening healthcare delivery across Ghana.
