There's a better way to charge your phone

September 9, 2017
in Technology

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a smartphone owner’s battery will not last until 11pm.
There’s also a commonly accepted wisdom that charging your smartphone in short bursts is bad for the battery.
This isn’t true, at least according to a battery company Cadex who own a website called Battery University.
They say that leaving your phone plugged in when it’s fully charged – which will happen when you charge it overnight – is bad for the battery performance in the long run.
As they put it:

Li-ion (lithium-ion) does not need to be fully charged as is the case with lead acid, nor is it desirable to do so.
In fact, it is better not to fully charge because a high voltage stresses the battery.

Once your phone reaches 100 per cent battery, it receives “trickle charges” to maintain the battery – these keep it in a high-stress state that wears down the battery over time.
They argue you should unplug as soon as its charged – which is hard to do when you’re fast asleep at 3am.
In short:

Don’t charge your phone overnight.

A better strategy is to charge your phone intermittently throughout the day.
Which we of course all have time to do and constantly monitor as a priority through our busy schedules.
Adapt your entire day to fit the product! Genius!
Here’s some other top tips besides, that help with fast charging:

  • Use a wall charger. It’s more efficient. The iPad wall charger is the fastest charging of the apple range.
  • Turn on airplane mode. This actually helps speed up the charging process.
  • Don’t turn the screen on or check it while charging – that uses battery.
