Ghanaian music duo R2Bees spent a decade developing their sound and perfecting their craft before achieving mainstream success in 2008, according to group member Omar Sterling.
Speaking in a recent interview on Nandoleaks, Omar Sterling said the duo’s musical journey began in 1998, long before they became household names in Ghana’s music industry.
“We’ve been in this game from like 1998. From ’98 to 2008 when we blew up, that’s 10 years of just being underground perfecting our art,” he said.
His account offers a glimpse into the years of work that preceded the duo’s breakthrough, challenging the perception that success in the music industry comes overnight.
R2Bees, comprising Omar Sterling and Mugeez, emerged from Tema and built a following with a sound that blends hip-hop, hiplife, highlife and Afrobeats. Over the years, the duo established themselves as prominent figures in Ghanaian music.
Their reflection highlights the importance of patience, consistency and continuous development in building a music career. Rather than gaining immediate recognition, the duo spent years honing their skills and refining their sound before reaching a wider audience.
Their experience also draws attention to the often-overlooked years of preparation that many artistes go through before their breakthrough, when they work to develop their music, build an audience and establish their identity.
For aspiring musicians, R2Bees’ journey offers a reminder that progress may take time and that working outside the spotlight can be an important part of preparing for greater opportunities.
As Omar Sterling’s account suggests, what may appear to audiences as a sudden rise to fame can be the result of years of persistence and dedication.
