Y102.5FM Kumasi has successfully launched the first preliminary stage of its highly anticipated 2026 Salafest Cooking Challenge, with Tafo Zongo emerging victorious after a thrilling display of culinary excellence at the Ayigya Market on Saturday, May 23, 2026.
The event attracted hundreds of patrons, traders, community leaders, and supporters from various Zongo communities across Kumasi, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with culture, competition, and community spirit.
Designed to celebrate the rich culinary heritage and traditions of Zongo communities, the competition saw participating groups prepare a variety of authentic local dishes while demonstrating creativity, teamwork, presentation, and exceptional cooking skills.
After a keenly contested challenge, Tafo Zongo secured first place, impressing judges with the quality, taste, presentation, and authenticity of their dishes. Aboabo Group finished as first runners-up, while Moshie Zongo Group claimed third place. Ayigya Group placed fourth, with Asewase Group occupying both fifth and sixth positions.
The Salafest Cooking Challenge forms part of YFM Kumasi’s annual Salafest celebrations, aimed at preserving cultural heritage, promoting community engagement, and providing a platform for Zongo communities to showcase their unique traditions and talents.
Speaking after the event, Programmes Manager of YFM Kumasi, Nathaniel Osei Kuffour, expressed delight at the success of the maiden preliminary contest and praised the participating communities for their enthusiasm and commitment.
“The Salafest Cooking Challenge is more than a competition; it is a celebration of culture, identity, and community. Through this initiative, we are highlighting the rich culinary traditions of our Zongo communities while creating opportunities for people to connect, compete, and celebrate together. The turnout and level of participation exceeded our expectations, and we congratulate Tafo Zongo on a well-deserved victory,” he said.
Mr. Kuffour further noted that the competition will continue through subsequent preliminary stages, with more communities expected to participate as they battle for a place in the grand finale.
