London based South African singer and producer Toya Delazy, has disclosed the reason why she dresses the way she does.
According to her, her style of dressing is a way for her to express herself and she described her fashion sense as, “Very alternative and full of colors, colors express how I feel and I also resonate with colors”.
Talking to Kojo Manuel on Y 107.9 FM’s Dryve of Your Lyfe Show she stated, “I like street style, classic style and mixing it all together. So it’s really about feelings and style and also about how I feel whether it attracts attention or it’s just to show how I feel”.
Talking about how she responds to people who criticize her based on her style of dressing she asserted that, she just ignores them and continues to wear anything that makes her feel comfortable.
“Although a lot of people complain and just trip out when they see me dressed the way I do because I don’t look westernized, I just ignore them and do me because it’s like we’ve lost ourselves so much that we can’t even see ourselves now so we call it evil” she noted.
She expressed that, for someone like her, who has been in and out of the UK and been to a lot of British museums and seen a lot of our artifacts stored up in their museums it makes her feel like even the British believe and appreciate our creativity and arts more than we do.
Toya believes there’s a lot Africans can do with their arts and creativity because, “It speaks so much power and I can’t even explain so it’s just like we are and have always been creative and we should start using our arts to express ourselves”.
