Human Resource Director at Vodafone Ghana, Hannah Ashiokai Akrong, has urged students without opportunities to study and work to explore nano degrees.
To her, pursuing a full degree in a particular field is not enough to prepare one fully for the job market.
“If you can have the opportunity of working and schooling, grab that because it helps you apply what you’re learning in the work environment. It as well really opens up your mind to different opportunities. I talk a lot about the youth exploring different degrees, nano degrees. A full degree in marketing is good but does it really prepare you for the job you want?” she asked.
Using a student pursuing a degree in Computer Science as an example, she indicated that such a student will have to set themselves apart from the other thousands of students. “At the end of the day you are among a thousand people who have pursued the same course, what will set you aside?”
According to her, a Computer Science student with certification in programming or artificial intelligence will be ahead of their peers by a milestone. “As a student you have to research on what the world is looking out for. Know the importance and trends of the industry you want to go into.”
Hannah Ashiokai Akrong in an interview with Rev. Erskine on Y107.9FM’s Leaderboard Series charged young graduates and students to try other online courses to gain the extra advantage.
She further advised students to also make time to volunteer their services to acquire varied experiences and soft skills.
