As the COVID-19 pandemic rampages through the globe, most countries have put in place measures to control the spread of the virus and Ghana has not been an exception.
To control the spread of the virus, Ghana put in place restrictions and bans on social gatherings which affected cinemas as well.
This led to most Ghanaian movie lovers binge watching on various streaming platforms whilst cinema lovers lost out on the action.
However, the Country Manager of Silverbird Ghana, Funmi Onuma has asserted that the starvation cinema lovers have faced during this lockdown period will only increase their taste for quality movies and put pressure on movie producers.
Speaking in a virtual discourse themed ‘100days of COVID-19 in Ghana: Learnings in the entertainment industry’ she stated that, “The new normal will influence the movies being made. Cinema lovers are scared of going out so if they do, it must be worth it.”
Funmi Onuma indicated that people will only go out on occasion and will not be frequenting public places like they used to.
She believes most people will see stepping out of their homes as a risk and will only do it to experience good movies.
Some cinema enthusiasts in Ghana have attributed the low quality of movies as a reason why they do not patronize local movies.
The Silverbird Country Manager advised movie producers, especially local ones to get creative and produce quality movies for their audience.
