Soul singer and composer, Amanda Black who has inspired many with her latest album, ‘Mnyama’ says working on the project saved her by being a shining light in her darkness.
She explained that the album which translates into Black is made up of songs which stem from conversations she had with herself “when I felt I was really lost and was in the dark.”
On her accord, the COVID-19 pandemic was unexpected and that affected her mental health. “2020 was such a knock to us. No one was expecting all this to happen and you know not being able to work, and make a living was really a kind of blow to me. I found myself in a space where I couldn’t think my way out.”
Amanda who has never been in a pandemic and oblivious of what it means started questioning how she would foot her bills and generally survive.
In an interview with Kokonsa Kester on Y107.9FM’s Weekend Rush Show, she shared, “It really was a difficult time for me and these conversations I was having with myself at the time influenced the album title, ‘Mnyama’.
Writing these songs during a dark time and choosing the title Mnyama, Amanda Black believes there is power in being black “and I always want to express that. It was me trying to get in touch with myself and after the isolation and everything, I was trying to encourage myself not to give up on my dreams. I had so many plans and I was feeling low. This was me convincing myself not to quit,” she elaborated.
Mnyama is a 10 track album which features some industry greats and touches the souls of music lovers.
