Have you ever wondered how people on the streets live? Has it ever crossed your mind how they feel being there? Have you ever put yourself in their shoes to know how it feels being on the street?
While some of them were probably born there, I’m sure a lot of them also did not imagine themselves living there but let’s just say life happened, and they found themselves there with nothing to do about it.
Although I haven’t been there before and do not wish to find myself there, I’ve heard stories and seen how a couple of them live and are treated.
From all I have seen and heard, it is not a nice experience and not one I think anyone would like to experience.
From personal experience, I once spotted this old woman around 10pm on my way home, eating in front of a closed shop.
I purposely passed in front of her to catch a closer glimpse of her and she looked very scared looking left and right which I wasn’t surprised about because the area was quite a rough one.
My heart begun to race as I could only imagine what that woman, old enough to be my mother was going through, especially at that time of the night because even I was scared walking in that area all alone.
I begun to ask myself a lot of questions. What if it starts raining? What if an there’s a sudden explosion? What if she’s raped or abused.
With all these running through my head, I just said a silent prayer for her, asking God to protect and keep her safe.
While thinking about that, I also asked myself some ways of helping such people, what measures were being put in place by government, NGOs or even individuals like myself to help them.
As I earlier mentioned, most of the people who find themselves in such situations probably did not see it coming and when it happened, it was too late to do anything about it.
Well yes you shouldn’t trust anyone but I believe a little act of kindness like getting close to them, showing them love and care, feeding or even clothing them can go a long way to put a smile on their faces.
I believe in our own little way we can impact these lives and make them feel loved and a part of us.
You don’t need millions to show love and kindness to these people. What I’ve come to realize is that, what we sometimes regard as nothing is something these people would appreciate and always remember you for.
Let’s try our best to help and touch their lives in whichever way possible as the Akan saying goes, “Ketewaa bia nswa” which means nothing is ever too little especially in this case.
What you term as little can go a long way to bless the life of someone in a way that you least expected it to. Show someone on the street love today.
