Eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia are equally as detrimental to the mind as they are to the body, and they can lead to extremely serious health issues for the rest of your life. It may not be obvious when a person is struggling with an eating disorder (ED), especially as the annual numbers continuously prove that the issue is more common than one might think.
The pressure to have the perfect body has led some celebrities to suffer these eating disorders, with some cases becoming so serious that they actually had to be hospitalized.
‘Euphoria’ actress Chloe Cherry, who plays Faye in the hit HBO show, recently revealed that she developed an eating disorder after working in the porn industry. Cherry, 24, explained on the ‘Call Her Daddy’ podcast, “It all started when this agent that I had when I was porn said to my face that I was fat.” She continued, “He said, ‘Everyone says that you’re fat and the fastest way to lose weight is by not eating.’ He said that to me and I was like, ‘What the f—k.'”
Cherry added, “It just turned into an eating disorder cause I was so young at the time. He said that to me when I was 18, and it was so f—ing freaky because no one in my whole life had ever said that I was fat and then it just became an obsession,” explaining that she tried to limit her calories to 200 a day.
Thankfully, over time, she started working with mental health professionals on her journey to healing, and she said listening to podcasts on eating disorder recovery and reading about other women’s experiences helped her. She also said that speaking about it with her friends helped her realize how dangerous her ED was. “To get out of it really took a lot of me opening up to all my friends,” she said. “Opening up about it suddenly made it all come down.”
Jazz Jennings
Jazz Jennings recently opened up about her struggle with binge-eating disorder (BED) after gaining a “substantial amount of weight.” The transgender activist posted before and after photos to show that she gained “almost 100 lbs. in a little less than 2 years,” but wanted to use this visibility to hold herself accountable for her health. “I suffer from binge-eating disorder, a disease in which I’m not only addicted to food, but I eat it in large quantities,” she wrote. “I’m posting this photo because it’s time for me to address my weight gain and hold myself accountable. I’m ready to change my ways; I’ve been saying I’m ready to turn over a new leaf, but I’m running out of trees now. I’m ready to take the initiative and create positive changes when it comes to my health and body.” Jennings explained that she has all the support she needs and now she’s ready to battle this ED. “I’m fighting to win,” she wrote.
Demi Lovato
Demi Lovato has spoken out about their struggles with anorexia and bulimia in the past. In May 2021 Lovato explained that they still struggle daily. The singer also recently reminded their followers on social media that complimenting someone on their weight loss can be harmful if they’ve had an ED. “If you don’t know someone’s history with food, please don’t comment on their body. Because even if your intention is pure, it might leave that person awake at 2 a.m. overthinking that statement,” they wrote.
Tess Holliday
Model and body activist Tess Holliday shared her experience with an eating disorder on social media. “I’m anorexic and in recovery. I’m not ashamed to say it out loud anymore,” she tweeted. “I’m the result of a culture that celebrates thinness and equates that to worth, but I get to write my own narrative now. I’m finally able to care for a body that I’ve punished my entire life and I am finally free.”
Halsey
Halsey apologized for sharing a picture on Instagram of her struggles with eating disorders. Not all fans took it well, although the singer said her intentions were good: “I had positive intentions. I would never want to harm someone who shares my struggle.”
Lady Gaga
The singer battled with anorexia from an early age, according to the Independent.
Though the star said she had had anorexia since the age of 15, she has grown to become a model for loving yourself and all you “imperfections.”
Alanis Morissette
The singer suffered from bulimia and anorexia between the ages of 14 and 18, when she was starting her music career.
