The Country Manager of Silverbird Ghana, Fumi Onuma has disclosed that her outfit is considering the introduction of drive-in cinemas to give movie lovers and cinema-goers the cinema experience while social-distancing.
According to her, her outfit has sent proposals to the Ministry of Tourism and other ride-hailing services to help them make their drive-in a reality.
She made this revelation during a virtual zoom interview on Y-Dialogues with YFM hosts, Akosua Hanson and NY DJ, discussing ‘100days of COVID-19 in Ghana: Learnings in the entertainment industry’.
She said, “The new normal is the drive-in we are thinking of and we need to do so to give moviegoers the cinema experience and also prevent the staff from losing their jobs”
The Country Manager for Silverbird indicated that the move was necessitated because most studios and movie production houses did not want to release their movies to the online platforms but to cinemas.
She mentioned that the cinema is more often than not a social institution that promotes bonding and social interactions. “The theatres gives us a live experience just like a football stadium.”
After the COVID-19 pandemic hit Ghana, the President placed a ban on social gatherings including cinemas as part of measures to control the spread of the pandemic.
