Facebook is coming to your TV. Not all of it of course, just a new standalone video app. You wanted it. Admit it!
After conquering our computers and mobile devices, Facebook is (finally) making its way to our televisions. The company announced yesterday, that it will soon release a new standalone app that will be available on Apple TV and Amazon Fire.
The new app will be 100% dedicated to video, which makes total sense since we are talking about TV. Users will be able to watch videos from their friends, and the pages they like. They will also get access to top live videos from across the world. Of course, as is always the case with Facebook, everything you watch will be used to recommend more videos you should also watch.
With its TV app, Facebook wants to compliment videos on your mobile devices. It does not intend to be a “Netflix-killer” or anything like that though – as explained by Dan Rose, Facebook’s VP of partnerships:
A lot of people when they’re watching video in News Feed during the day will save it for later, because they don’t have time to watch. Now it’s easy to watch on your TV if you want to do that. We want people to be able to consume content wherever they are – whether it’s on their phone, whether it’s on their computer — and TV is just another screen for that.
It’s a massive step for Facebook, since it’s the first time the company is launching a standalone app solely dedicated to video. And of course, entering a new medium where no other social media platform has been before. Except YouTube of course.
I’m quite excited about it. It not only confirms that video is at the heart of Facebook’s strategy, but it also opens a new era where our TV screens simply become extensions of the other screens we use daily. I can’t wait to watch videos on my TV, as long as Facebook can serve them in high quality.
What about you? Would you download the Facebook video app on your TV?
