Ghanaian Reggae/Dancehall record artiste Kahpun has shared the characteristics every dancehall artiste should posses.
He disagreed with the perception most people have about dancehall artistes being stubborn, rowdy, associated with everything violent and being all over the place to generate trends.
In an interview with Kokonsa Kester on Y 107.9 FM’s Weekend Rush, he said, “Dancehall has a culture on its own and the individuals are also on our own and we all come from different families. So if you choose to do dancehall, you must see it from your own point of view and not what people say about it or the culture”.
Kahpun shared that people should not judge dancehall artiste based on their appearance but rather based on the genre of music else they will go wrong.
“For me, I know the genre is clean and without a problem. There’s nothing wrong with it and I think it has to do with individual differences. If you’ll be violent or rowdy then it has to do with you not dancehall”.
Talking about the controversy that comes with the genre, he shared that controversy in music in general is expected because it helps music sell.
He believes musicians should be creative and lyrical and their personalities should not be judged based on the genre of music they do.
The dancehall artiste has however been recognized by the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards(VGMA) with two nominations as Best Reggae/ Dancehall Artiste of the Year and Best Reggae/Dancehall Song of the Year respectively which he expressed that he is very excited about. “It has motivated me and I expect more”.
