Ghana Youth Walk 2018: Achieving SDG 10 in a fun day

Based on the need to achieve the SDGs by 2030 and the President’s request for all stakeholders to come on board to achieve this, The Brown Berry Show on 21st September organized the Ghana Youth Walk 2018 dubbed ‘Living Diversity: Promoting Cross Cultural Understanding ‘ #ColourWalk , which sought to promote Unity and Peace in accordance with SDG 10: Reducing Inequalities Within and Among borders brought Accra to a halt last Friday, 21st September which is Founders Day and also doubles as International Day For Peace.
Speaking to the Founder of the Initiative, Brown Berry, he stated that being an entertainment person, in as much as he had been organizing various walks with diverse themes over the years, he realized the need for him to advocate and create awareness to help tackle the SDGs in a way different from the usual seminars and workshop which leaves majority of the youths out and what is communicated isn’t imprinted in the minds of those present. Hence the Ghana Youth Walk dubbed Colour Walk.

The event had people smearing and throwing colour powder on each other. Majority of the participants had painted their faces to represent various races, religion, tribe, culture and country.
With a simple dialing of *800*66# to register for free, the event witnessed over 2000 young people gathered for the great cause. The walk started from Accra Mall through the streets of Opebia through 37 to Alliance Française.
ACTIVITIES
Activities marking the walk included give-aways, video games, fashion show, open air jam, photo shoot, colour games, music & dance performances, pizza & kenkey eating competition, and award ceremony.
A medical health screening was organized by UltraSound Ghana for free to help these youths screen for kidney, liver, cysts and a dietician to provide medical advice.

OVER THE YEARS
With this year being the 8th edition, The Ghana Youth Walk Team worked on the first walk held in 2011 under the theme ‘Getting to Zero’ (an HIV/AIDS walk). The second in 2012 (Youth Walk for Peace) and the third was held in 2013 to promulgate the message of Road Safety. The fourth walk was targeted towards reducing the effect of Drugs and Narcotics in Modern day Ghana. The fifth walk was on Youth Empowerment (#PowerWalk) and in 2016 we walked for Peace as it was an election Year. In 2017, a lot of young people came out to walk in Promotion of Cross Cultural Understanding. The previous Walks have witnessed a total of about 15,000 participants.
According to Brown Berry ‘The goal is to reach 100,000 youth by the year 2025. With your support we can make this happen.’
