Mr. Kwame Ansong, Chief Executive Officer of Tour Operator and Destination Management Company, Sunseekers Tours Limited, has professed that he does not believe that a business needs to be passed on to one’s child to be taken to the next level.
He told Rev. Erskine during an interview on YFM’s Y-Leaderboard Series that he believes a business should be trusted in the hands of the person who is best qualified and not necessarily to one’s children.
Per this, he opined that the best preparation that one can ever have for their child is to make them run through the mill.
Mr. Ansong expunged, “They need to learn to dirty their hands, see the nitty-gritties of the business and how the business runs. For example, if it is tourism, how do you implement a tour package, how do you ensure that there is quality delivery when you’re tour guiding and how you’re packaging, the person needs to know all that”.
The CEO advised that parents should support their children in whatever they want to do and guide them through it, rather than impose their own business on the children because they might not be interested but they could be doing whatever they want to do in their own field of comfort and still keep an eye on the family business.
Mr. Kwame Ansong shared an instance with his oldest son who is now fifteen years old. According to him, his son happens to be very business minded but his focus is more on other things and not the tourism industry.
“I always encourage him to think big and to look elsewhere but then I make him understand that in everything you do, you need to understand the business and know you’re not too big for anything.
So I think the best preparation with parents is to make their child go through the mill if they’re interested. Don’t necessarily impose on them to be in the business. If they’re not interested, let them be and just let them build up”.
