Over the weekend, Ghanaian International Jazz act, Stephanie Benson came under heavy criticism after many news portals attributed the “A true artist needs no record label” headline to her.
According to the artiste whose tweet got many news sources reporting the above headline, her post never referred to record labels.
Speaking in an interview with Happy 98.9 FM’s DJ Advicer, Stephanie said, “In my post, I never said an artiste doesn’t need a record label and I have been insulted. I never even mentioned a record in my post and that is it”.
Clarifying her tweet, she said, A true artiste does not need to be labelled or have a title. But you develop as you grow and your soul and preferences change. That is what I meant and I did not mean a record label.
She tweeted, “A True Artist needs no Labels No Titles, just a stage & imagination. It’s okay to enjoy an artist without The Label, ok to aspire to an artist with nothing to offer but Talent. An artist who shows wealth is lacking in what Money cannot buy Talent & love. Give ur adoration wisely.”
Adding: “Music is Music whatever the genre is. Don’t get caught up in differences. It’s the differences that define us.”
Revealing the inspiration behind her post, she motioned that she has a lot of artistes reaching out to her, “telling me they want to be rappers, international acts and whatever they want to be”.
But advising them, she stated that music is an art and true artistes must not restrict themselves to a single genre of music just like she does.
“As an artiste, I love different genres of music and I can also write other genres.”
On her authority, the situation in Ghana is different and surprisingly, artistes are forced to do one genre. “You do different genres of music and they start questioning why you’re diversifying but, they don’t really understand who a real artiste is.
The songstress motioned that artistes should be allowed to explore and do different things.
