Ground-breaking Ghanaian musician, Zakia Kunge has shared when and how she realized she was gifted with such resonant voice.
According to Zakia, she started singing since her early stages as a child but only murmured alongside background music. However, she indicated that she did not really regard that as a special element of herself.
Fast forward into her second cycle education, she started taking on the stage during entertainment sessions. She later became popular in school (Aggrey Memorial SHS) and referred to as the ‘Aggrey Celine Dion’.
Interviewed on Y107.9 FM’s ‘Dryve of Your Lyfe’ with Kojo Manuel, she said, “I think I can say I began singing in high school. Up unto High School I was always signing but I didn’t think it was anything special. I mostly mimed in school, where we had entertainment shows, music played at the background then we sign along. I was called Aggrey’s Celine Dion because every entertainment and variety nights I sung only Celine Dion songs.”
The ‘Purpose’ singer disclosed that she appreciated her gift more when her voice miraculously healed a broken relationship. Eventually she saw the need to take her craft to the next level.
“So one particular night, I was doing the usual miming and after we were done with the show, this lady walked to me and was like, she was touched by my voice so she decided to make-up with her boyfriend. I always also like I wasn’t singing then she told me they turned on my mic at some point so my voice came through then I was like ‘wow’. Then I have something here so let’s monetize it,” she narrated.
