Jerry Shaffer, ace hypeman, creative artiste and the original creator of the trendy Sheibalabala has disclosed events that led him to have a career in the entertainment industry as a hypeman.
He recounted that, he initially owned a club in Nigeria but unfortunately, they lacked hypemen to thrill people. He saw that opportunity and suggested to his partner they needed to bring in someone who will be the resident hypeman of the club and thrill patrons who frequent the club.
“Back in 2015, I used to own a club in Nigeria. As we know Lagos is the heart of entertainment in Nigeria but I had my club outside of the city. The culture was different there, they didn’t have hypemen just DJs. So, I spoke to my partner that we need a hypeman in the club that can just give us the boils that we need. He asked me to get a microphone and I started trying the microphone. He then was like I sound so good on the microphone so I should just be the hypeman for the night then we later put out auditions for hypemen. I did it that night and then a couple of girls walked up to me with so much complements then went on to ask me to host their birthdays for them. The rest is history they say,” Jerry Shaffer narrated to Jonny Stone on Y107.9FM’s YCampus Express show.
For the Official Hennessey Hypeman, he primarily did not give a lot of thought to the hype business but was living with it to push his club business and give it the urge it needed. He honed the skill and continued with the hype business for a year since he believed that attracted a great number of people to his club.
The Hypeman aspect of the entertainment scene has, for some years been unrecognized and unappreciated. Being in the business, Jerry Shaffer is driven to give the hyping business the relevance it deserves and encourages other creatives not to undermine the craft.
“The only thing I hate about the Hypeman business is the disrespect people give to us. A lot of people tend to undermine the industry but it really pays and it’s always fun hyping, trust me,” he added.
