Zinedine Zidane’s last game as a professional footballer is remembered for his red card after headbutting Marco Materazzi. 14 years after the event, the Italian defender revealed what he said.
Zidane headbutting Materazzi’s chest is one of the most famous incidents in World Cup history. Zidane was sent off in extra-time in the final match of his career.
Materazzi, in an Instagram live, revealed what he told the now Real Madrid coach to cause that reaction. He confirmed that he mentioned a member of Zidane’s family.
“We had contact in the area. He scored France’s goal in the first half and Domenech asked him to mark me. After the first clash, I apologised and reacted badly. The third time, I frowned. He told me: ‘I’ll give you my shirt later’ and I replied that I preferred his sister to his shirt.”
Those comments made Zidane lose his head and headbutt Materazzi’s chest. The Italians went on to win the 2006 World Cup in a penalty shootout.
In the Instagram live chat, Materazzi showed his love for Boca Juniors. The former Italian footballer was wearing a Boca Juniors shirt when talking about what happened that night in Berlin in the 2006 World Cup final.
