Daughter of one of reggae’s most successful legends, Nkulee Dube says she feels intimated by her father Lucky Dube’s legacy in the reggae music industry.
Speaking in an interview on Y 97.9 FM, with Haruna Babaginga on the ‘Reggae Republic’ she said.
‘’I have never worked with my dad, and his friends expect me to aspire to be at his level on stage. They expect me to be like Lucky Dube in professionalism and greatness, it’s a lot of pressure and it is intimidating. However, on the other hand, it helps me push myself and I try to challenge myself. So my father’s legacy intimidates me sometimes and other times it’s a source of inspiration.’’
Almost thirteen years after she witnessed her father’s murder, she still has difficulties talking about her father’ death.
‘’ I was in the car with my father when he was murdered. It was a very bad experience’’ she said
Nkule Dube is the second child out of eight (8) siblings and according to her, she and another sibling are following her father’s musical footprints.
‘’My brother and I are the only ones pursuing music currently’’ she added.
Now an artist in her own right, Nkulee Dube has three albums to her credit and working on her fourth album. Her impressive stage presence many people say resembles that of Lucky, but Nkulee has managed to find her own soulful style. South African roots reggae, flavoured with dancehall, spiced with jazz – which she calls it ‘ethno Ragga’.
