Ghanaian actor, Ekow Smith Asante, has mentioned that due to the unattractive salary that comes with being in the Ghanaian film industry, no Ghanaian actor can afford to buy a home in the upscale East Legon neighborhood.
He made this statement after Veteran actor, Agya Koo unveiled his Kumasi mansion which set social media ablaze.
The actor explained that due to the low pay in the industry, actors and actresses are unable to purchase homes especially in desirable areas like East Legon.
He disclosed that a lot of actors and actresses face numerous financial challenges hence it will be difficult for them to build a home because most of them rely on favours and gifts to live well.
Comparing Nigerian actors to their Ghanaian counterparts he stated that they are earning millions of dollars because they approach the field more commercially than Ghanaians.
Ekow Smith added that because the profession paid so little compared to Nigeria, many actors from his day were unable to engage in their skills.
He added, “Somebody can give me something because of my particular role in a movie. With gifts from people, it can support you to build, but I think it will take a very long time without it”.
He emphasized that most actors of his time have ventured into other businesses, such as operating restaurants, due to the industry’s inability to provide substantial financial returns.
