NSG has had an outstanding record of hit songs this year. From the BackRoad Gee-assisted After OT Bop, the 4PLAY-produced Colonization to their recent release Petite, the collective has no intentions of slowing down.
The 6-member group, whose music has been dubbed Afroswings or Afrobashment, consists of Kruddz, OGD, Papii Abz, Dope, Mxjib, and Mojo. The group is renowned for its camaraderie, with members from Nigeria or Ghana, and growing up together in London.
Three members Kruddz, OGD, and Mojo had a chat with Mark DeForce on the All Abroad Africa Show, where they shared insights into the making of their hits and touched on their African heritage.
Member Kruddz, whose real name is William Awotwe-Mensah, expounded on their 2021 hit Colonization. The song features the lyrics, “Take everything he’s got, Colonization,” which expresses the group’s desire to take charge through their music. Kruddz explained that their goal was to take the audience of every country and have a strong influence on them even after their retirement.
Matthew Temidayo Ojo who goes by the name Mojo, on the other hand, shed some light on the relationship of the sextet. “We all grew up together, we have been through the same thing through the countless years. It’s not like random people put together,” he said. He further explained that despite occasional disagreements, the group eventually comes together to find a solution. There are times they resort to voting and seek the opinion of their manager or a trusted person to break ties during votes.
Earlier this year, NSG launched a venue called Area Bar in Accra, and according to OGD, they just wanted to invest back in Africa. Also comparing Nigeria to Ghana, Dennis Awotwe-Mensah noted that there were more hangout venues in Nigeria, and they just wanted to play their part in bridging the gap.
In 2020, NSG captured the hearts of many when they released “Lupita,” a tribute to African women. The music video, which has over 4 Million views on YouTube featured several dark-skinned models. NSG described the song as an appreciation to African women whom they had a preference for.
The group recently released Petite a catchy song produced by JAE5 which represents who NSG is, fun and lively!
